Crew members encountered a challenging, yet very educating SCBA maze prop during the early morning training. The prop included three levels of "fun" and various obstacles each member was required to navigate their way through. Such obstacles included a narrow 90 degree halfwall slalom section, navigating over exposed floor joists, various diminishing clearance obstacles, and entanglement hazard, and the ever popular floor collapse. A great job by all involved. Members are anxiously awaiting the opportunity to return to this marvelous prop. A special thanks to NOFD Skylight Station for coverage. Wed, 17 Aug 2011 14:08:37 GMT http://www.lfrd.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=276 Carbon Monoxide Detectors - Now Mandatory in New Kentucky Homes and Businesses http://www.lfrd.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=275 While many of us are still enjoying the air conditioning in our homes and apartments, cooler weather is just around the corner, and it may be time to consider heating season safety. For Fire and EMS Departments heating season often means an uptick in Carbon Monoxide Poisoning calls. Carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that is a byproduct of incomplete combustion. Sources of carbon monoxide within homes and businesses are often heating appliances, such as furnaces and boilers; vehicles that are left running indoors; fireplaces; and sometimes gas fired cooking equipment. Carbon monoxide is often thought of as "the silent killer." In March of 2011 a new law became effective in Kentucky. The 2007 KY Residential Code and 2007 KY Building Code were amended to require carbon monoxide alarms to be installed in the immediate vicinity of all bedrooms in dwelling units and in sleeping units of occupancies which include sleeping rooms, such as apartment buildings. CO Alarms are required in any newly constructed homes or apartment buildings as well as any of these buildings that have had construction work done on them such that the work required a building permit. The Residential Code is specific in that CO Alarms are required in one and two family dwellings outside each sleeping area and in the immediate vicinity of all bedrooms of homes that have fuel-fired appliances (Propane or natural gas) and in homes with attached garages. The La Grange Fire & Rescue department recommends every home have one or more CO Alarms located in both the bedroom hallway and on the floor where the gas-fired furnace is installed. We also recommend that before heating season starts you have your heating equipment and chimneys inspected by a qualified technician to ensure that CO will not leak inside your house. Stay safe out there and guard your family from the dangers of carbon monoxide and fire! The fire appeared to have been electrical in nature with a power line down at the rear of the structure and extensive damage to an electric meter and associated area. Crews arriving on scene used an ABC extinguisher on the area along with thermal images cameras to check for extention and smoke ejectors to help ventilate the light haze inside the structure. Heavy storms with lightning had passed through the area shortly before the call however it has not been confirmed whether they were a direct cause of the incident. Crews worked with railroad personnel on scene and discovered that there were 9 cars of the northbound freight that had left the tracks, some of which rolled down a steep bank approximately 50 feet from the railbed. One tanker containing hydrogen peroxide came to rest upright at the bottom of the embankment and after investigation by LFRD crews it was determined there was no product leaking from the railcar. Fortunately the area where the incident occured was served with a siding track and rail traffic, though slowed some, was able to continue. Specifically, an outage map app is now available for download on iPhone, Android and BlackBerry devices. Customers can search for "LG&E and KU Outage Maps" within the app stores of each of these mobile phones. Once downloaded, customers are able to view the companies' outage map in a platform designed specifically for a mobile interface. Like the outage map found on LG&E and KU's website, the new smartphone app displays outage numbers in an interactive graphic and chart format showing outages by county and by zip code. The app is updated automatically in regular intervals based on information available in the companies' outage management system. Additionally, once operational staff assesses the extent of an outage, estimated restoration times are provided on the map. "Our smartphone outage map app is our first entry in a larger mobile communications portfolio that will be progressively introduced to customers," said Greg Thomas, vice president of Energy Delivery – Distribution Operations for LG&E and KU. "Enabling the public to access and view outage information on the go is just another way we are working to enhance our customers' experiences with us." Additional mobile communications offerings, such as two-way outage texting and email/phone-based outage updates and notifications, are currently in development. Beginning with the launch of online outage reporting at http://my.lge-ku.com, LG&E and KU have steadily increased the communications channels through which customers can receive and access outage information. For instance, customers have been following the companies' tweets at www.twitter.com/lgeku and accessing near real-time outage information at www.lge-ku.com/storm since 2010.LG&E and KU's blog, www.yourenergymatters.blogspot.com, has been engaging customers on a variety of energy-related topics for more than a year.
