Structure Fire on Ft. Pickens Road
By Assistant Chief Adrian Doleman
January 24, 2008
On Thursday, January 24, 2008, LaGrange and Ballardsville fire departments responded to a report of a structure fire located in the 2600-block of Fort Pickens Road.
Upon arrival, Car 4505 and Car 4508 observed heavy smoke and confirmed a working fire in a one-story single family residence. Car 4505 assumed Command with Car 4508 taking Operations.
With the arrival of Engine 4535, the crew advanced a (1- 3/4") attack line through the front door and made an aggressive attack on the fire. Shortly thereafter, other crew members arrived from LaGrange and Ballardsville and assisted the initial entry crew in containing the blaze. The main body of fire was knocked down in a matter of a few minutes. Crew members spent most of their time in overhaul operations ensuring to extinguish small hidden fires that had extended in a wall and into the attic. In addition, crew members were able to salvage many of the occupant's personal belongings.
An occupant of the house told fire officials that she noticed smoke coming from around the fireplace. The occupant advised that when the smoke became heavier she notified the other occupants and evacuated the structure and called the fire department.
