A Focus on Drafting Operations
By Assistant Chief Adrian Doleman
June 10, 2008
LFRD members attending Monday night and Tuesday morning training got a lesson on drafting operations. Drafting is the process of obtaining water from a static source such as lakes, rivers, oceans, cisterns, streams, portable water tanks and swimming pools. Drafting is typically used in areas that do not have fire hydrants (positive water) or in areas that do not have a reliable municipal water supply.
Static water supply sources are the primary source of water for fire protection in some areas of our fire protection district. This is why it is important that we examine the critical issues that determine the usability and reliability of static water supply sources.
