Crews Quickly Contain Structure Fire in Crystal Lake Subdivision

By John Foster - Oldham Era

A nervous dog helped save her family's home Monday as she alerted a nearby painter to her burning house.

Painter William Hahn said he smelled smoke when he arrived to work at a house on Haven Lane near Crystal Lake that morning.

He chalked up the scent next door to a meat smoker.

But the neighbor's dog, Jenny, kept darting in and out of a dog door looking nervous, Hahn said.

She grabbed his attention, and then he saw smoke creeping from the garage, attic and

windows.

Crews from La Grange Fire and Rescue and the Ballardsville Fire Department quickly extinguished the fire at Stanley Huckabee's home, LFRD Maj. Mike Rouser said.

Heat and smoke damaged much of the home's interior, but the exterior remains in tact.

The fire may have started from wiring between the basement and main floor, Rouser said.
